Below are basic Iyengar Yoga props I recommend. These are suggestions on where you can purchase them. Feel free to research for best options!
Yoga Mat – Mats are used for the non-skid aspect. Thin mats with good stickiness work best for standing poses as thicker ones may be too cushy which makes balancing on one foot more challenging or for basic standing poses. Thicker mats may be helpful if the class is for a mostly floor-based practice. Blankets can be used to pad knees as needed. Mats are typically not needed for a chair yoga class.
Yoga Strap – Pune-style strap has a slider buckle – click HERE. The advantage is that the buckle allows for easier looping or sliding. The D-ring straps are wider, and typically longer. The 2 rings may be more challenging to adjust or secure in place.
Yoga Block – Wood blocks are ideal, cork is a good alternate. Foam blocks work fine for beginners or particular purposes. For foam blocks, look for the firmest ones possible.
Yoga blankets – Pune style white cotton blankets are ideal as they pat down firmly. Mexican blankets are also workable. It is advisable to have a minimum of 3 blankets in Iyengar Yoga classes, preferably 5.
Yoga Chair – The Yoga chair is one of the distinct props in Iyengar Yoga. It is used in regular classes very differently than how it is used in Chair Yoga classes. Find one that is sturdy, without a back “cover” and no cross bar in the front legs.
